Why Liberals Must Fight Back Against Conservative Slander

By now, we’ve all heard what Ann Coulter thinks of John Edwards, the former Democratic Senator who’s running again for President Of The United States.  During her speech on March 2nd at the 2007 Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) she called him a “faggot” while indirectly referencing actor Isaiah Washington and the controversy he caused by insulting one of his Grey’s Anatomy cast members on-set with the same epithet.  (Why he went to rehab instead of simply and sincerely apologizing remains a perplexing mystery.)

Of course, Edwards isn’t gay.  He’s married with children and, as far as I know, there’s no evidence to suggest he’s anything but straight.  Furthermore, he isn’t the first liberal male to get slandered in this matter by Coulter.  She’s referred to former Vice President Al Gore as “a total fag”, even though he, too, has a wife and kids.  You know you’re pretty desperate for zingers if the best you can come up with is an outright lie about a guy’s sex life.  But that’s Ann Coulter for you, the high-heeled fascist run amok.  She’s chronically allergic to making reasonable arguments.  Hard to believe that Lorrie Goldstein of The Toronto Sun used to think she was a serious commentator.

Coulter’s been libelling and slandering liberals for 10 years now and the real tragedy is that no one seems interested in taking her to court to force her to stop lying about them.  How many liberal politicians and pundits have been the unfortunate targets of her vitriol?  I’ve lost count.  How many of them have reached their breaking point with her?  Zero.  I stand to be corrected but there hasn’t been one lawsuit filed against her for anything she’s said publicly or written in her syndicated columns and best-selling books.  No matter what prominent conservatives say about her, she is one of them and speaks for them, hence the CPAC invitation and the frequent appearances on the Fox News Channel.  (Even major networks like NBC continue to have her on their programs.)  Here in Canada, The Winnipeg Sun continues to publish her column.  Her efforts have helped Republicans immensely during elections, with the exception of the 2006 mid-terms.

While there are many critics of Coulter, including myself, there is one organization that has consistently exposed her dangerous lunacy on a regular basis.  That would be Media Matters For America, the liberal watchdog group dedicated to correcting and singling out numerous examples of conservative misinformation.  They do a much better job of holding her to account than the mainstream press who continues to provide a showcase for her anti-American rhetoric without a substantial grilling.  (Don’t believe me?  Click here and see for yourself.)

The sad truth is she isn’t the only faux conservative smearing liberals and getting away with it.  As Media Matters has documented for years (and Crooks And Liars, Daily Howler and other sites have noted to a lesser extent), Rush Limbaugh, Tucker Carlson, Robert Novak, Bill O’Reilly, Michelle Malkin and numerous others have been getting away with their shoddy, dishonest commentary for far too long.  The question remains:  why do liberals never fight back against the lies that are spread against them?

It wasn’t always this way.  The media used to actually report information and not merely parrot Republican talking points.  We used to get the real scoop on Democrats and Republicans.  Now, we’re drowning in spin and you have to look elsewhere to find the truth about America’s public leaders.  Even liberal commentators, like Tom Friedman and Maureen Dowd of The New York Times, two columnists I used to read and respect on a regular basis, have a lot to answer for with regards to their views on Al Gore and Senator John Kerry.  (Friedman went on NBC’s Meet The Press on December 17th last year to say that Americans who voted for Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 2004 did so while holding their noses which he helpfully demonstrated to illustrate his ridiculous and untrue viewpoint.  Dowd continuously ridiculed Gore on a regular basis during his run for the Presidency by keeping alive a number of false myths initiated by devious Republicans.  Today, strangely, she says about the exact same guy that he was “prescient” on the exact, same matters that she used to goof on him about.  I can’t believe I was ever a fan of these two.  They’ve let me down far too often.)

Ever since Bill Clinton decided to run for President back in the early 1990s, The Republican Noise Machine, to use the title of Media Matters’ founder David Brock’s book, have made it their personal mission to not only win elections by any means necessary but to keep as many liberals out of the political process as possible.  How do they do this?  Through conservative media and countless political organizations.  Liberals didn’t know what was coming.  In fact, they’re still not aware that many Americans take this misinformation campaign seriously.  Why?  Because it has infiltrated the mainstream press who, in turn, legitimizes these campaigns by not questioning the dubious motives of those who run them.

I consider myself to be a libertarian, a Canadian who possesses a mix of conservative and liberal views.  I am, by no means, an extremist.  An example:  I’m an atheist but don’t bemoan those who believe in God or even Allah.  That’s their business.  I just don’t think there’s a higher power and haven’t for the last 11 years.  As a result, I’m rather tired of self-righteous Republicans and conservatives, self-appointed guardians and moralists of all things religious, who have hijacked politics for their own greed and ambition on this continent.  One gets tired of transparent phonies like Bill O’Reilly and Newt Gingrich who deliberately use the words “secular-progressive” and “liberal”, respectively, like they’re the most evil ways to describe your fellow human being.  Meanwhile, O’Reilly got caught red-handed sexually harassing one of his former producers, which even his lawyer didn’t deny (they argued that it wasn’t illegal), and Gingrich dumped one of his wives while she was suffering from uterine cancer.  Talk about sleazy.

What will it take for liberals to regularly defend their reputations?  How many times can you possibly ignore being trashed unfairly by all sorts of unscrupulous people?

Because of this highly successful propaganda campaign run by Republicans and conservatives and continuously endorsed by many in the mainstream media things aren’t going to get better by themselves.  The second a prominent liberal, who doesn’t shy away from that wonderful word, decides to put these dangerous fools in their place by eating into their bottom line the better off all of us will be.  Why?  Because a succession of lawsuits would bleed The Republican Noise Machine dry, something that’s long overdue.

Don’t get me wrong.  I’m not anti-conservatism.  (This website has defended and praised Eric Margolis, one of the few right-wing pundits to expose the increasingly corrupt Bush Administration on a regular basis.  Plus, the old-school philosophy has always had strong selling points like separation of church and state, protecting the environment, lean and responsible government.)  What I am against is dishonesty finding a permanent seat in our political discourse.

If liberals want to end the perfect storm of bullshit that has been damaging them for years, there’s only one solution:  call in the lawyers.

CORRECTION:  Originally, this piece had mentioned that Sun Media still published Ann Coulter in two of its newspapers.  Calgary Sun columnist Ian Robinson noted in his March 11th column that she hasn’t been published in that newspaper in months.  Good.  She remains a weekly columnist in The Winnipeg Sun.

  1. Your liberal, hypocritical, sanctimonious droll is why
    individuals such as yourself  and
liberals in general are obvious targets of satire from the likes of Ann
Coulter; grow up and stop taking things so personal.

  2. First of all, I’m a libertarian.  I have a mix of conservative and liberal views.  To paraphrase my Grade 4 & 5 teacher’s catchphrase, “Your comprehension skills are the pits!”

Secondly, how am I hypocritical and sanctimonious?  You didn’t exactly provide examples.

Finally, Ann Coulter isn’t in the satire business, otherwise she’d get laughs for her pitiful, sad comments.  She’s in the business of keeping conservatives in power and liberals out of the political conversation in America by dishonest and unscrupulous means.  She’s also laughing all the way to the bank thanks to her numerous TV & radio appearances, and best-selling books.  I’m not convinced she believes in anything she writes or says publicly.  It’s all a show to make money for herself.  It’s amazing how easy she’s been able to accomplish this, especially after reading your laughable comment.

As for your suggestion to “grow up and stop taking things so personal. [sic]”, would you have said that to the disabled Vietnam vet who Coulter openly derided by saying, “People like you caused us to lose that war.”  Funny, right?

Or, how about the Muslim community after Coulter made this remark:  “I think our motto should be post-911, ‘raghead talks tough, raghead faces consequences.'”  Hysterical, right?

Or, how about former President Bill Clinton who she described as being “a very good rapist”?  Witty, no?

The good news is even conservatives are starting to get tired of her, as this link – http://www.theamericanmind.com/2007/03/05/an-open-letter-to-cpac-sponsors-and-organizers-regarding-ann-coulter/ – demonstrates.  Then again, I guess they don’t have a sense of humour either, right?
