Zero N.N.A. Nominations For Sun Media

Late last year, John Cosway wrote about The National Newspaper Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize.  In his December 28th piece he made an astute observation:
Prior to [founding publisher] Doug [Creighton]’s ouster, the Toronto Sun collected 17 NNA awards, not including seven honorable mentions, from 1971 through 1992.
Only two NNA awards have been awarded to the Toronto Sun in the 14 years since Doug’s ouster. Two!
That speaks volumes about Doug’s leadership and the positive, competitive mood at the Sun from 1971 through 1992.”
Photographer Patrick McConnell was the last Sun employee to win this prestigious award.  He won for “spot news photography” in 1995.  You read that right.  It’s been over a decade since anyone associated with Sun Media has collected one of these prizes.
Two days ago, the latest batch of National Newspaper Award nominees were announced through a press release.  (Click here to read it.)  The Globe And Mail leads the pack with 13 nominations followed by The Toronto Star and the Montreal paper, La Presse, who each have 7 nods.  My hometown paper, The Hamilton Spectator, snagged two nominations along with several other Canadian publications.  All in all, 60 newspaper workers (photographers, reporters, columnists, editorialists) from 20 different news outlets were singled out for the work they did in 2006.
How many did The Toronto Sun receive?  Zero.
How about The Ottawa Sun?  Zip.
Calgary Sun?  Nothing.
What about The Edmonton Sun, The Winnipeg Sun and The London Free Press?  Altogether, they received no nominations.
To be fair, Quebecor’s French paper, Le Journal De Montreal, did earn 2 nominations.  But Sun Media was left out in the cold.
So, the NNA slump continues.
The 58th Annual National Newspaper Awards will be handed out in Winnipeg on May 11, exactly 2 months from today.
