Availability Of 2013 Oscar-Nominated Films On DVD

The nominees for the 85th annual Academy Awards were announced this morning and as always, there are a lot of questions.  But honestly, only one of them really matters:  how many of the nominated films are available on DVD?

What follows is the complete alphabetical list of the 38 features that were singled out by the Motion Picture Academy this year and when you can see them, either on home video or at your local multiplex.  As in past years, this list will be continually updated as new information becomes available.  The winners will be announced February 24th.

UPDATE 2:  The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and Zero Dark Thirty will both be out on March 19.  Les Miserables drops March 22 (EW has more details here) while The Impossible will be available on April 23.  All these titles can be still seen in theatres for the time being.  These new DVD release dates have been added to the list.

UPDATE 3:  The Gatekeepers has been playing in select American cinemas since February 1 (although it did play in New York as far back as late November last year).  According to the National Post, it will open in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver on March 1.  It begins its UK cinema run on April 12.

UPDATE 4:  For those wanting to see the documentary Chasing Ice on DVD, you’re going to have to wait a while.  Comingsoon.net has it penciled in for September 10.  For the time being, it’s still playing in theatres.  Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, which won two surprise Oscars on Sunday, will be out on April 16.  Both dates have been added to the list.

UPDATE 5:  Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln will be arriving on DVD on March 26.  You can get the single-disc version, a double-disc edition (Blu-ray and standard DVD), or the four-disc set (Blu-ray/standard DVD/digital copy).  The release date has been added to the list.

UPDATE 7:  After a long break, it’s time to finally fill in the rest of the gaps on this list.  The Gatekeepers documentary quietly hit home video July 9 so it can now be seen on DVD.  Coming this Tuesday is the foreign film nominee No starring the Mexican heartthrob Gael Garcia Bernal.  The long wait for Amour’s debut on DVD, the French romantic drama starring Best Actress nominee Emmanuelle Riva, ends August 20.  And finally, Kon-Tiki, another foreign film nominee, drops on August 27.  All the new changes have been made to the original list which is now complete.
